In most cases, the decision to buy new or recycled wood pallets is determined by the product you’re shipping and who the end receiver is.
A lot of businesses just need pallets that work as expected and can be used to ship their products without damage.
Recycled pallets (also known as used pallets, reconditioned pallets, and refurbished pallets) are perfect for this.
Here’s why you might want to consider them:
One of the biggest factors that affects how much a wood pallet is sold for is the price of the lumber it’s made from.
Because they’re made from used wood, recycled pallets may save you as much as 60% over new pallets (based on national averages).
Whether your warehouse uses 100 pallets a month or 1000 or more, switching just half of the pallets you use from new to recycled can translate into huge savings over the course of a year.
You might think that recycled pallets aren’t strong because they’ve been used before.
But even though they can look pretty worn and weathered, in most situations recycled pallets can hold around the same amount of weight as new pallets if they’re repaired properly and the weight of the load is distributed evenly.
It’s easier and faster to repair a pallet than to build a new one. Because recycled pallets are already built, your order turnaround time will be shorter than with new pallets.
If you care about how your pallets look, recycled pallets might not be a good fit for your business.
These pallets come from various locations and have been used and repaired over and over again. As a result, you’re always going to experience some sort of inconsistency in terms of appearance.
While they may all share the same dimensions, you’ll probably notice differences in deck board thickness and board spacing. You might also find nails that aren’t perfectly flush with the wood.
This probably won’t matter if you just need to move your product from point A to point B, but it could pose a problem if your end-client has very specific standards or your company is in a heavily regulated industry.
In these cases, you’d be better off considering a combination pallet or new pallet.
Recycled wood pallets are much cheaper compared to pallets made of new wood.
Recycled wood pallets are also more environmentally friendly – less trees need to be cut down to build them, less pallets are sent to landfills, and less carbon emitted during the repair process (compared to a new pallet).
We always have 48x40s on hand, and occasionally have 48x48s and 41x37s (quantities available will vary).
For sizes we don’t stock, we can build custom remanufactured or combination pallets.
As long as they’re repaired properly and the load is distributed evenly, recycled pallets can usually hold just as much weight as new pallets.
Yep. Any wood can be heat treated.
